Feb. 12: The “Monopoly of Violence” and Police Brutality

I really wanted to talk about this for last week’s episode, but it was already too late.

A lot of people are going to disagree with me about the role of police; they want to point to the “net positive good” that they have on communities, claiming that cops restore “justice” and “order” in our states and that we should increase funding so that “cops can do their jobs better”.

I’m here to tell you that that’s not enough and that it won’t ever be enough.

I’m not satisfied using ad-hominem fallacies to explain an issue that has persisted over time. People tend to isolate instances of police brutality as if they are something that is so absurd and never heard of; that the cops who do the brutal policing are “bad apples” and that it’s “not all police”.

I hope you tune in to next week’s episode. I plan on deconstructing these false notions of policing and shedding light on the real problem: the institution of policing.

And if you’re skeptical about this or if you even disagree with me, that’s fine. You don’t have to listen, in fact, you have the free will to do so.

But, to those who want to learn or maybe challenge your beliefs surrounding police brutality, I ask that you listen to listen, not listen to respond.

xoxo
