May 28: Why is Shye on Hiatus?

Hi, hi everyone!

The last time you heard from me, I was talking about mental illness. I hope you found that episode to be exhilarating and thought-provoking.

There were some things I was going to expand on (particularly about sex) in the next SNS episode, but as many of you know, I stay busy and active. I am actually writing this in an airport about to head to D.C.!

I am super excited to be spending a good portion of the summer in the nation’s capital. From my D.C. recap episode, I think you all can tell I can see myself living here and doing good policy work.

With that being said, these past few months have been nonstop: from finishing up at Purdue and graduating to moving from West Lafayette and then spending time with my family briefly only to turn around and head to my internship this summer, I have been slacking when it comes to maintaining monthly episodes. I want to take the time now and say that I am sorry for not being consistent with SNS. It’s been about two months since I released an episode, so this hiatus comes far too late, but I wanted to post something anyway because I would hate to leave everyone in the dust, up in arms about what’s happening with Shye.

If you’ve made it this far, hooray! I want you to know that I love everyone who listens to SNS (even if you are a hate listener *wink*) and am incredibly thankful that you have the patience to listen to me talk about things.

I am not sure when I’ll be able to release my next episode, but I hope that I’m still on your mind and that you’ll come back and listen when the next episode drops. Also, now that I am a big adult girl, I am not confident about my uploading schedule. I may have to change things and slow down with SNS, but whatever I choose, I will ALWAYS be sure to communicate with you.

Have a great week, and stay awesome ❤

Nov. 29: We’re Back, But We’re Scared

Hey gang, I missed you.

I wanted to do some catharsis and let you in on my inner state these days.

I’ve been thinking a lot about tomorrow’s episode and how paralyzed I have felt in trying to talk about this because my position doesn’t feel welcomed in contemporary society.

I hope you can understand that my description of this topic does not come from some ill-intentioned desire to further deepen people’s wounds or to be a bigot or racist or anything like that. I feel like that’s obvious if you know me, but if you don’t, please read my words: my intention is to have an open dialogue with my friend Clay, and to discuss what we have learned about Palestine and Israel, as well as shed our moral light and clarity on this topic.

I have to keep reminding myself that no one can take away my identity or the things that I care deeply about and that I am not wrong for using history and a larger context to guide my position.

Of course, I realize I’m a biased girly. I cannot take away my own dispositions and morality, nor do I think that is necessary. Please, don’t hold this against me.

Another thing about my special guest, Clay: He is so well-spoken and thoughtful and I really am so lucky to have such well-intentioned and knowledgeable people in my life. His perspective on this is extremely valuable and he taught me a lot about Jewish and Palestinian history during this conversation, so hopefully you can learn something too!

If you want to see more of Clay, follow him on Instagram @claymunism.

Lastly, remember our friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? Well, this is one of my favorite quotes from him:

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Never forget that. Sometimes, you have to stick your neck out for those who have done so their entire life, for that is the just thing to do.

That’s it, folks. Do good, be good, keep learning.

June 15: Life Is So Busy

Hey gang!

It’s been so long since I’ve written to you (</3) and for that I am sorry!

There’s no episode this week and because of that, I wanted to share some updates and explain myself:

  1. I’m moving (YAY!)
  2. I’m taking a summer class (OKAY!)
  3. I’m mentally preparing myself for work (…!)

Here’s a little sneak peek though: I’m collabing soon with this really cool influencer who I met at a conference in Miami!!! He’s so funny and talking with him is so natural, so we’ll spend the pod episode getting to know each other PLUS we’ll make some fun content for TikTok, so stay tuned 😀

One other thing:

I’ve been pondering the content creation realm and have spent a lot of time thinking about streaming. I’ve been thinking about it since the beginning of this year, and I finally got around to buying a tower PC plus working on buying the whole setup (maybe not all of it because we’re balling on a budget, but you get the point). I have some content ideas and I’ll finally have the space to set up a nice recording area, plus, I’ve thought about creating a YouTube channel and editing the streams. Part of me is worried that I’m not going to have a lot of time and the other part of me is anxious about its potential performance. I’ve been feeling doubtful, but you know what I say to that?

YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY SO GIVE IT YOUR BEST!

March 30: Um, Who’s Shye?

What’s up my shy guys, I’ve missed talking with you!

Next Thursday is going to be all about me because IT’S MY TENTH SHYE’S NOT SHY EPISODE!!!!!

Holy crap, that’s insane. The support for SNS has been incredible.

I asked y’all on my Instagram to give me questions and I’m going to do my best to answer all of them. Some are very embarrassing, some are more political in nature, and some are about getting to know me and my personal life. I’m excited to share answers to these questions and I’m hoping to have a surprise for this episode ^.^

Also, I will be talking about some major current events because part of who I am is being the annoying Political Science friend who bring up politics in almost every conversation. Hey, what can I say? I’m invested in the political structures and happenings of the world and trust me when I say that this is a crazy time to be following the news.

If you aren’t up to date with news stories, I’m begging you to take the initiative on that. Personally, I like AllSides for my written news and NPR’s Up First for my podcast news (besides my own, hehe). When you don’t know something for yourself, you’re susceptible to mis and disinformation from those around you, and you know how I feel about that.

Alrighty. That’s the blog for today. To stay up to date with my blog posts, subscribe below!

Tune in next week. Stay awesome ❤

March 9: Some Life Updates!

Welcome back to another blog post. If you’ve been keeping up with these, I thank you dearly (so, so much).

I’ve been working on this podcast for around four months now and have fallen in love with the joy it has brought me. I don’t think people understand the impact that I want to leave and how badly I want to grow this space (it’s a goal of mine).

It makes me smile every single time one of you tell me you listen to my podcast.

With that being said, life for me has been C R A Z Y! So… this upcoming week (next Thursday), there will be no episode (I know, sad). I will be out of the country, using my time to take a break and relax with friends!

Be ready to listen to my voice again on Thursday, March 23.

As always, stay awesome!

Feb. 23: (Special Guest) Kait Ming Hui Greer

Kait is one of my bestest friends.

A couple of months ago, I told Kait I was thinking about starting a podcast. She asked me a question that no one else had: What are you going to name it? Of course, I told her that I had no clue, but I wanted something cool with my name in it.

Now, she’s my partner in crime. Kait does all of the artwork for SNS; honestly, I wouldn’t be able to do this without her.

We met in Argentina and since returning to the U.S., we’ve been as thick as thieves. I like to think that I’m the cool one and she’s the puppy, you know?

We argue and we laugh and we watch anime together, so come relish in our episode where Kait and I (go on so many tangents) talk about life and d e a t h.

Be sure you check out Kait’s website (AND BUY HER A COFFEE): https://www.kaitminghui.com

Feb. 12: The “Monopoly of Violence” and Police Brutality

I really wanted to talk about this for last week’s episode, but it was already too late.

A lot of people are going to disagree with me about the role of police; they want to point to the “net positive good” that they have on communities, claiming that cops restore “justice” and “order” in our states and that we should increase funding so that “cops can do their jobs better”.

I’m here to tell you that that’s not enough and that it won’t ever be enough.

I’m not satisfied using ad-hominem fallacies to explain an issue that has persisted over time. People tend to isolate instances of police brutality as if they are something that is so absurd and never heard of; that the cops who do the brutal policing are “bad apples” and that it’s “not all police”.

I hope you tune in to next week’s episode. I plan on deconstructing these false notions of policing and shedding light on the real problem: the institution of policing.

And if you’re skeptical about this or if you even disagree with me, that’s fine. You don’t have to listen, in fact, you have the free will to do so.

But, to those who want to learn or maybe challenge your beliefs surrounding police brutality, I ask that you listen to listen, not listen to respond.

Jan. 26: It’s Okay To Feel!

We got another Sentimental Shye episode in the works.

Unfortunately, I dreaded writing this post. I dreaded the thought of being vulnerable. Being emotional.

There were points in my life when these things were seen as weaknesses. Things that people, people I loved, took advantage of. Past tense.

Now, I embrace what I feel because feeling is raw and real and, even though feeling bad happens, it must mean there’s a possibility to feel good things too.

So I encourage you to feel something today. I also encourage you to subscribe to Shye’s Not Shy (on Spotify and to my blog posts) so that you can listen to next week’s episode where I take this and talk to you about feeling blue.

Jan. 12: My Thoughts On Intersectionality

We made it another week! I really hope you enjoyed the guest episode last week!!! Next week’s episode is gonna be a little more substantive, so, I present to you, The Prologue:

Intersectionality is a big word and many people don’t know what it means OR they think they know what it means (but they haven’t taken the time to do the research to understand what it really means) OR they have no clue what I am talking about.

If any of these people are you: HEY! Let me do what I do best and explain this because:

  1. it’s super interesting,
  2. after reading the piece in which the theory is founded, I’ve gained a greater appreciation for it (so I get a lot of joy from talking about it), and
  3. you want to know stuff, right?

So, please tune in next week and let me know your thoughts.

Also, if you’ve read this far: hooray!! Always feel free to message me to let me know how I am doing. I’m looking forward to revamping things in the future, so please stick with me ❤

As always, stay awesome!

xoxo

Jan. 4: Meet Maggie Becraft!

Hello everyone!

My name is Maggie, and Shye and I became close friends in high school. We were in a lot of the same classes and were on the dance team together. We’ve remained good friends since and I love her so much!

I am so excited to be a part of her podcast and to share things about myself. I had a blast telling stories and laughing and I hope you enjoy the episode!

Also, ladies, if you’re single my number is 260-5…LMAO jk…unless.
